The NHS Recent Cyber Attack and how to avoid this in the future

Following the recent cyber-attack that caused major, unprecedented disruption to 40 NHS trusts, as well as numerous other high profile organisations across the globe, it has been highlighted that many organisations are still relying on ageing, unsupported software, without proper patching policies. As the dust settles in the aftermath of this attack, now that IT systems have been patched, attention will be quickly turning towards the vulnerabilities that allowed such an attack to be possible and propagate with speed.

These events highlight the importance of continuous investment your IT systems; ensuring that you are running on supported platforms and security vulnerabilities are fixed before they can be exploited is key, this means not only Desktop operating systems but also servers and the applications running on them. This practice not only helps protect your systems from security attacks, but also ensures that you can take advantage of feature and functional enhancements that are delivered as part of new versions and patch releases. visualmetrics have tried to help here by collating the end of life dates for the mainstream software environments below.
