Whilst the on going fitness of purpose of a standalone operational application - be it a spreadsheet, graphic design package or contact database - can be assessed merely on its compatibility and continued operation, a Business Intelligence Solution, by definition a solution to a business problem or pain, must be considered in the context of the changing business conditions an organisation is experiencing.
Whilst a BI healthcheck necessarily will report on the technical makeup of the application and its toolset - usage, compatibility, update, obsolescence, replacement, etcetera - it must be expansive enough so as to include those non-product portions of the application which are intrinsic to its operation; the user community and their skills, the evolving measures for business success (evolving KPIs, compliance and regulatory requirements, updated balanced scorecard etcetera), changing business conditions (mergers and acquisitions, market share and saturation, external and internal financial fluctuations etcetera), the solutions use in an operational context, and so forth form critical components of the health check.
During the BI Healthcheck the original project roadmap, put in place when the Business Intelligence Solution was first envisaged, should be reexamined for successes and failures and route causes - a particular failure of the application to deliver against a specific key driver will often indicate an obvious problem and remedy.
From the BI health check a full report of the application's fitness of purpose and an audit of the technical environment will be delivered, along with recomendations for the next step to maintain the application's ongoing role in supporting the business and its community.
